A Pain in the Cervix

This article says from Science Daily :
Labor Pain Comes From the Cervix
quoted from article:
"Childbirth is painful, yet scientists are still somewhat in the dark about what actually causes the pain. A new doctoral thesis from the Swedish medical university Karolinska Institutet now shows where this pain comes from and opens the way to the development of improved methods of pain relief."

I'm not sure I believe this. I've had two natural births myself, and the pain I felt didn't feel like it was coming from the cervix. I'm not an expert though, and I'm glad that new research is being done. I do hope that better pain relief will be developed for those who opt for it. I definitely agree that spinal anesthesia is not the best option, and it saddens me that it has become so popular and commonplace.

I personally put more stock in Grantly Dick-Read's concept of the Fear-Tension-Pain Syndrome. He wrote a book called Childbirth Without Fear, and several modern childbirth education courses utilize this concept. The idea is that fear causes the muscles to tense up, and that tension is what triggers the physical pain we feel. In my mind this explanation makes the most sense, and Dr. Dick-Read did over 20 years of research in this in his own practice.

At any rate, I'm glad for the attention being drawn to childbirth, and more awareness that we need something better than what the medical community currently offers.
